After buying Mainland Tools, a small tool company in China, Thomson Tools made this report.  The report’s goal is to look at Mainland’s processes and infrastructure because it will now be part of Thomson’s supply chain.  The building where Mainland Tools works is old and was built in stages as the company grew.  The company not only sells products, but it also helps North American customers with technical issues.  An Operations Manager (Venkataraman & Pinto, 2018) is in charge of keeping internal operations running smoothly, which is necessary for good supply chain management. 

 Managing internal operations properly makes services and products more valuable, which lowers costs for customers, raises the quality of products, and makes services better (Venkataraman & Pinto, 2018).  As a result, operations management in a supply chain needs careful planning and cooperation between business owners and supply chain partners (Venkataraman & Pinto, 2018).  So, operations management is very important for a business to be successful and affects how things are done every day (Venkataraman & Pinto, 2018).

 The Operations Manager at Thomson will look at how Mainland’s operations and supply chain are currently working.  This analysis is necessary for smoothly bringing Mainland Tools into Thomson’s global market.  It is the job of the Operations Manager to find problems and suggest ways to fix them.  The study will look at technology, facilities, and inventory control from a systems-thinking point of view.

Brief Partner Company Description

 Mainland Tools is a Chinese company that makes about $6 million a year.  Several problems that make operations less efficient were found during the analysis of its operations and infrastructure.  These problems include having too much inventory and losing prepared orders, which make up 15% of all orders and cost the company about $900,000 a year. 

The old system for processing orders is mostly to blame for the losses.  The company grew, but its structure and department layout weren’t well thought out. To store extra inventory, the company had to rent a warehouse five miles away from the main building.  These inefficiencies make it harder for Mainland to deliver products on time, which could hurt Thomson’s reputation for having a smooth supply chain.  The company analysis section will go into more detail about these problems.

Company Analysis

Systems thinking is a methodical way to figure out why people act in strange ways and find problems in systems that could lead to unintended results (Ballé, 2018).  Events that happen inside or outside a supply chain can have a big effect on how it works, either directly or indirectly (“Supply…,” 2016).  This analysis uses systems thinking to look at how the different parts of Mainland Tools’ business work together and affect each other (“Supply…,” 2016).

 Lean manufacturing and agile manufacturing are two ways to cut down on waste or make it easier to adapt to change quickly (Venkataraman & Pinto, 2018).  Lean manufacturing, or lean production, is all about getting rid of steps or activities that don’t add value (Venkataraman & Pinto, 2018).  Agile manufacturing, on the other hand, lets you respond to changes outside the company more quickly by using special tools and processes (Venkataraman & Pinto, 2018). 

Agile manufacturing might be good for Mainland Tools, but right now the main goal should be to put lean manufacturing into practice.  This plan will help find places where the company can do better, which will increase its value and profits (Mirdad & Eseonu, 2014).  Lean production and systems thinking work well together, which makes them good for making operations better (Ballé, 2018).
