Transformational Leadership Analysis

Transformational leadership is a type of leadership where a leader encourages change and creativity among the followers to support the achievement of the organization’s goals (Thawabiya et al., 2023). Such a leadership style encourages a firm’s workforce to accomplish far beyond their expectations. Transformational leaders give their subordinates the autonomy to choose how they will tool themselves (Ystaas et al., 2023). Certain special actions that transformational leaders perform also help to highlight their special type of leadership. This assessment outlines the setting of transformational leadership, identifies the leader’s behaviors, discusses how the behaviors can promote and enhance superior care and befitting organizational culture, and reviews the link between transformational leadership, teamwork, and communication.

Scenario

The scenario shows a real-life transformational leadership at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, California. With 626 beds and more than 60 health programs, this hospital strives to provide top-quality medical care. The institution upholds core values of stewardship, excellence, integrity, and respect. Huntington Hospital is widely acknowledged for its exemplary stewardship. The leadership support, adherence to core values, and commitment to the Magnet recognition mission led to the hospital achieving the first Magnet designation in the San Diego Valley. The workforce at Huntington Hospital is also very hardworking; this also goes a long way in ensuring that the hospital has a good reputation.

During the initial period of this nurse’s practice at Huntington Hospital, behavioral changes that signified transformational leadership emerged. Perhaps the most important factor of appeal was the kind of working environment cited by the hospital work-related challenges and learning. The nurse manager, a true representative of a transformational leader, supplied the necessary resources for the nursing roles and delegated the task to the nursing team to provide the best patient care. They promoted a continued nurse training activity to increase the efficiency of professional development. Collaboration with the nurse manager proved highly beneficial as the latter ensured that the employees contributed to developing common values in the framework of the nursing position. She was very hands-on in patient care, which kept the team motivated to deliver results ahead of expectations. Furthermore, she provided leadership coaching, thus acting in the dual capacity of a team leader and a department head within the division. 

Transformational behaviors or actions the leader exhibited with examples. 

At Huntington Hospital, the nurse manager incorporated and practiced several transformational behaviors that positively impacted personal growth and the workplace. From the analysis of the behaviors portrayed by the leader, one of the behaviors is personalized consideration. It focuses on a leader’s attentiveness to followers’ needs. This is normally achieved through the formulation of a tutor/mentoring and coaching relationship. Transformational leaders develop friendly personal relationships with the workers and engage them in voluntary human resource development activities (Chen et al., 2021). Mentorship is one of the critical aspects closely related to transformational leadership (Liu et al., 2023). For instance, a registered nurse in a leadership position had a model presence and recommended developing foster and attend employees’ training programs to attain the best self.

Inspirational Motivation

Another transformational behavior exhibited by the leader is providing motivational goals. The main purpose of a transformational leader is to ensure that subordinates achieve an esteemed objective. Inspirational motivation entails the leader modeling the behavior and accomplishing a given task (Kim & Cruz, 2022). Leaders help nurses in numerous ways, inspiring them to deliver the best patient care results. Transformational leaders work with their followers to make them produce results beyond their expectations.

Idealized Influence

One more type of influence that the leader demonstrated was ideal because he was a role model to the people. Idealized influence is the ability of a leader to guide the followers with the feeling of challenge and inspiration (Lindert et al., 2022).  Some actions that depict identificational influence are winning the employees’ confidence. Trust building by transformational leaders is expressed through delegating decisions relating to tasks by the workers (Liu et al., 2023). For instance, the nurse leader supported participating in the employee training program to pursue excellence. In addition, the nurse manager included interactions concerning the treatment of patients; evaluating these outcomes helped improve patient status during individual supervision. The nurse manager ensured confidence was obtained and all the tools and information needed to complete the responsibilities proficiently and offer quality healthcare services were available.

Impact of Transformational Behaviors on Nursing Excellence and Healthy Work Environment

Transformational behaviors play a major role in ‘going above and beyond’ to deliver the highest-quality care and cultivate a culture of excellence in nursing practice and workplace health promotion (Liu et al., 2023). In a more specific method, these behaviors help improve the quality of care in that readers gain trust through idealized moderation. When nurses trust their leaders, they can practice good-quality nursing. Another crucial issue is the support of career advancement. Patients get the best services, and the nurses do their best when participating in different practice development activities (Kim & Cruz, 2022). Developing these training opportunities helps the professional and the person. Stamping features of transformational leadership cultivate the best self in the nurses, thus tending towards a salutogenic working environment. Therefore, nurses who perform professionally have lots of experience and knowledge in caring for patients.

Examples of Transformational Behaviors Promoting Nursing Excellence

A leader’s behaviors and actions are crucial in fostering a healthy workplace culture (Liu et al., 2023). One important aspect of these actions is their role in fostering intrinsic motivation in employees. Employees encounter numerous challenges and issues that can negatively affect their intrinsic drive. Transformational actions, like personalized consideration, support mentorship (Liu et al., 2023). This assists employees in building intrinsic motivation for their work. Idealized consideration entails attentively listening to and resolving individual concerns, crucial for nurturing a positive workplace culture.

Contribution of Leader’s Behaviors and Actions to a Healthy Workplace Culture

Leaders’ behaviors and actions are central to creating healthy workplace cultures. In this regard, these behaviors play a crucial role in enhancing intrinsic motivation in employees. Many problems and issues in the work environment can negatively affect the workers’ intrinsic motivation. Mutual respect and appreciation displayed by transformational behaviors like personal consideration created the culture of mentorship, thus fostering employees’ attitude of self-effort towards performing tasks (Boamah, 2022). Moreover, idealized consideration includes assiduous heeding and responding to individuals’ concerns, which is significant for maintaining a healthy organizational climate.

Examples of Behaviors Promoting a Healthy Workplace Culture

One more proof of how a leader contributes to a proper organizational culture implies the possibility of reaching higher results than expected by the staff. It is shown that when the manager sets the pace and collaborates with the employees, they can deliver their best (Dextras et al., 2023). It fosters the creation of a high-performance culture across all the teams in an organization. A leader’s behaviors help support a healthy organizational climate of trust in employees’ ability to perform their duties (Boamah, 2022). This way, when promoting any change, the employees trust that their abilities to deliver on set tasks will be successful and positive to the organization.  For example, behaviors like idealized influence facilitate the authority of decisions concerning the tasks among the workers (Ystaas et al., 2023). This reinforcement and offering of requisite tools fosters a competent organizational climate that helps the staff accomplish their goals and objectives.

The Relationship among Transformational Leadership, Communication, and Collaboration with other Teams and How This Promotes Excellence in Nursing Practice 

Communication and collaboration are two facets that are intimately entwined with transformational leadership in many ways. Transformational leaders emphasize communicational competence since they encourage the free flow of information by engaging supporters by including them in making decisions.(Thawabiya et al., 2023). This form of dialogue is essential for developing high quality in the area of nursing since it acknowledges and promotes the role of nurses in solving problems that affect the achievement of positive patient outcomes. The main features of transformational leaders include setting and communicating organizational goals to everyone in the organization (Ystaas et al., 2023). Another important attribute of transformational leadership is communication, which is essential as it involves directing and mobilizing people’s motivation to accomplish established goals (Ystaas et al., 2023). 

Examples of Communication and Collaboration Promoting Nursing Excellence

Another area in which transformational leadership is established in collaboration is the achievement of common objectives (Jiatong et al., 2022).  It also focuses on leading organizational change to achieve a common organizational goal. Realizing these goals requires the employees’ concerted efforts, hence, the creation of organizations. Transforming leaders foster collaboration by setting and attaining goals and visions common to all members (Gebreheat et al., 2023). It also organizes and encourages the employees to associate with other teams, increasing the measure of ensuring the teams cooperate on projects that would necessitate group work. This effective process of collaboration improves the quality of nursing practice considerably.

Transformational leadership is one of the leadership styles that significantly influences the nursing practice and organizational culture by enhancing the nurses’ trust, professional growth, and communication (Jiatong et al., 2022). These behaviors were observed by Huntington Hospital’s nurse manager, leading to improved patronage, staff development, and working conditions outcomes. Transformational leaders increase the effectiveness of the nursing staff through practicing delegation, building excellence and trust between the nurse leaders and the led staff, and encouraging the performers to enhance patients’ quality outcomes (Dextras et al., 2023). This leadership style also works for individual nurses and indirectly affects the efficiency and image of healthcare organizations.
